Nelakondapalli
|
|
Nelakondapalli village is situated
about 20 km from Khammam which is known for its
historic glory. There are certain archaeological
glimpses at the places known as Virataraju dibba
and Keechaka Gundam claiming importance in the
days of Mahabaratha. Virata Raju was the king of
Virata Nagaram and it was under him that the
Pandavas worked after their twelve years of exile
in the forest. Keechaka, the brother-in-law of
Virata who tried to misbehave with Draupadi, the
wife of Pandavas, was killed by Bheemasena,
working in disguise as a cook by name Valaludu.
Some Buddhist Stupas and idols found in the
excavations in 1977 had further supported the
belief that this district had historical past. The
excavations here have revealed foundations of
brick built Viharas, wells, Cisterns, a Mahastupa,
terracotta figurines, a bronze image of Buddha and
nine stone Idols of Buddha, miniature stupa carved
in lime stone and other early historic materials

Papi
Kondalu |
|
As the
mighty Godavari river races past the hills taking
the course that resembles a narrow gorge, it
appears to be in hurry. The launch ride from
Kunavaram to to Papi hills- the confluence point
of Sabari river with Godavari where from the river
turns brown and turbid- is a pleasant experience.
As the launch gets closer to the jungles which
cover the river route all along, it would be a
visual delight and feast of colours for a naked
eye. The jungles are inhabited by colourful tribal
people. Papi Hills is believed to be a place where
all the sins are cleansed.
