Dharmapuri Temples

Gauthama Mahamuni and King Dharma Varma are mentioned in the mythological background of the Dharmapuri Temple.
Dharmapuri attained religious importance owing to the existence of the shrine dedicated to Narasimha Swamy, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. There is a Sthala purana known as Dharmapuri Kshetra Mahatyam on palm leaves with 3500 Sanskrit slokas describing the puranic story and greatness of this Lord. It is dated in the saka year 850, which corresponds to A.D. 928.
The name of this village is mentioned in the inscriptions and literary works. The Kurkiyala inscription of Jinavallagha dated to A.D.945 mentions this village as Dharmavura or Dharamapuramu; gifted by King Arikesari II to his court-poet Pampa as an agrahara for his great work Vikramarjuna Vijaya.

 

 
Dhulikatta

The Buddhist stupa and vihara found here were constructed during the last quarter of 2nd century BC on a prominent mound. The stupa was enlarged with addition of ayaka platforms and embellishment on the drum with more than limestone slabs carved with representations of stupa and Muchilinda Naga.
Associated with the structures, punch marked Satavahana and Roman coins, ivory combs, seals, silver portrait coin of Pulumar, beads and bangles, terracota figurines etc. were discovered.

 

Elgandal Quila

Located 10 Kms from Karimnagar, Elgandal was once the capital of Telangana. The fort is built on a hill which was ruled by the Kakatiyas, Bahmani's, Qutub Shahis, Moghuls & Asif Jahi's . A mosque in the fort built by Zafar-ud-Dowla in 1754 A.D. has minarets which oscillate when shaken . Tombs of several muslim saints exist here. On the 11th & 12th day of Moharram an annual Urs is celebrated in honour of these muslim saints. Other places of intrest are temples dedicated to Neelakantha Swamy & Narasimha Swamy.

 

Manthani Temples  

Manthani, 70 kms from Karimnagar is situated onthe banks of river Godavari. This is a very ancient center of Vedic learning and even today there are many scholars well versed in Vedas & Sastras. Among several temples situated here the important ones are of Lord Saileshwara, Laxminarayana Swamy, Omkeshwara Swamy & Mahalaxmi. It is also a main centre for Jainism & Buddhism.

 

Molangoor Quilla
 

Molangoor Quilla, 30 Kms from Karimnagar , strategically located on summit of a big isolated granite hill , this fort was built by the Kakatiyas. The ruins of palaces, Garrisions, stables and other structures stand as mute withness to the valour and pride of the fort.

 

Nagunur Temples

There are ruins of a cluster of Kalyani, Chalukya & Kakatiya temples. The pillers and galleries around the Siva temple here are worth seeing. The most important temples in the complex is the Siva temple which has three shrines. The main entrence to the temple is on the northern side and the three shrines face the other three directions. The beams of the temple have sculptured images of musicians playing on mridangam and other instruments. Panels are carved with dancers in graceful poses.

 

Kondagattu
 

Kondagattu, about 35 Kms from Karimnagar is the temple of Lord Anjaneya. Situated amidst hills, valley & water springs Kondagattu is blessed by nature and very scenic. According to the folklore, the temple was constructed by a cowherd some 300 years ago. The present day temple has been built 160 years ago by Krishna Rao Deshmukh. It is belived that if a women offers puja for 40 days at this temple then she will be blessed with a child. Apart from the temple, the fort of Kondalaraya & Bojjapotana caves are worth seeing at Kondagattu.

 

Mukteshwara Swamy Temple

The ancient temple dedicated to Mukteshwara Swamy is of special significcance as two Sivalingas are found on a single pedestal.
This picturesque spot Kaleswaram lies in the interior of thick forest at the confluence of the river Godavari and its tributary Pranahita. This place can be reached by bus from Karimnagar via Manthani or from Warangal via Parkal.

 

Raikal  

Raikal , Located 75 Kms from Karimnagar the acient temple of Kesavanatha Swamy is situated here.built in the 13th century A.D. by the Kakatiyas the temple has beautiful sculptures. Another intresting temple is that of Panchamukhalingeswara Swamy ( Lord Siva with five faces ) which is belived to be one of the only two existing , the other being at Kasi. Besides there is a temple of Bhimanna in whose honour an annul Jatra is held for 3 days during Januvary - February.

 

Sri Rajarajeswara Swamy Devasthanam  

Sri Raja Rajeswara Devasthanam is in Vemulawada village. The presiding diety of the Temple is Sri Raja Rajeswara Swamy (Siva Lingam) which is very sacred and lakhs of devotees all over Andhra Pradesh, especially from Telangana region visit the temple to offer prayers.

 

Shivaram Wildlife Sancturary  

This 37 sq.Kms riverine forest mixed with teak & terminalia is home to Marsh Crocodiles of the river Godavari. It also harbours Panthers, Sloth Bears, Nilgai, Black Buck, cheetal, Python & Langoor. The Sloth Bears, Nilgai, Black Buck, Cheetal, Python & Langoor. The undulating natural terrain adds to the beauty of the sancturay.
The best season to visit is December to April.
